Rethinking Mentoring: Building Communities of Inclusion, Support, & Accountability

This workshop is designed to start a new type of discussion about mentoring by describing the common problems that pre-tenure and post-tenure faculty members experience and why traditional mentoring programs fail to meet those needs. We propose an alternative framework for mentoring that focuses on needs assessment and shifts the idea of mentoring from a relationship between two faculty members towards building a broad network of support, community and accountability.

Mentoring 101: How to Get What You Need to Thrive in the Academy

In this workshop, we challenge the conventional wisdom about faculty mentoring and present a new framework to help you re-imagine how mentoring works. All participants will map their current mentoring network, identify the pressing areas of need that are not being met, and create a plan to expand their existing mentoring network.

You will:

Identify how traditional ideas about mentoring leave faculty needs
unmet
Discuss the challenges of conventional wisdom about faculty
mentoring
Establish a new, alternative, needs-based framework to re-imagine
mentoring
Offer participants the opportunity to map their current mentoring
network and create a plan to expand their existing mentoring network

Building a Publishing Pipeline: Concrete Strategies for Increasing Your Writing Productivity

As academics, we have been told time and again to write often and as much as we can, but no one teaches us how to keep track of the many different projects that we may be working on at any given time. As a result, we are pulled in multiple directions, and incremental progress made on multiple manuscripts can make it feel like our productivity – and our motivation – is at a standstill. By conceptualizing all of your writing projects as moving through a pipeline, you can make progress on a daily basis and keep everything flowing towards publication.

In this workshop, you will:

Establish a sustainable daily writing practice
Experiment with a tracking system to analyze where to focus your writing and research efforts
Make a concrete action plan for moving several projects forward simultaneously
Celebrate the process of moving your work from one stage of the pipeline to the next
